Hello all,
After many days and nights of tinkering with my essays, I edited them a final time and at last submitted them. Here is what I wrote (and now they have links!).
I have read several of other Gaians' scholarship entries on their blogs on the Scholarship Pod, and I have to say that I am absolutely honored that there are so many people in this world who have dedicated their lives for the greater good. Reading their answers made me feel empowered, inspired and impressed. :)
Take care everyone, and enjoy,
Jenna
What is your purpose?
To channel my kindness, determination and passion for life to bring justice, human rights and peace to marginalized and discriminated people across the world.
What do you love, and how will (or do) your actions demonstrate this?
I love helping others and the sound of laughter. I live by Gandhi’s words, striving to “be the change” because of my strong desire to promote social justice. As a Gaia Ambassador, I’m grateful to have been given more tools to inspire social change. One of my dreams is to attend law school and get a degree in social justice/ human rights law in order to eventually be in an organization like the Human Rights Campaign. The theatre is another of my passions, and plan to use my playwriting skills to encourage a call to action. It saddens me that my generation is sometimes called “The Apathetic Generation,” and I plan to transform our reputation and inspire others through my plays and screenplays.
I’m an activist at heart, and participate in social justice protests and peace rallies, while also raising money for local charities as the Fundraising Chairperson for Prytanean Women’s Honor Society. I’ve also independently fundraised for other non-profits including the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization that cares for and supports children with cancer. I’m an officer of the Davis Nourish International chapter, which I will raise money for so we can travel to impoverished towns in third-world countries and help them with projects they desperately need.
Through these and other simpler actions like smiling to strangers and other random acts of kindness, and by walking in the footsteps of leaders like Gandhi and Cesar Chavez, I am the change I want to see in this world.
Write your ideal job description. If you can get paid just to live, how would you spend your time? What would you devote your life to? What would your days be like?
I would first follow Jon’s blog and learn to live “36 hour days” so that I can have more time to contribute even more to the world. Then I’d plan and lead these following projects:
Work with groups like Nourish International in our goal to give financial aid to impoverished towns across the world.
Hire those amazing “Free Hugs!” people you can find on youtube.com, and have them give free hugs across the world as a full-time, paid career.
Graduate from law school and volunteer to represent people who cannot afford lawyers.
Become one of those “Free Hugs” people.
Start a conscious restaurant that I’ve dreamed of which will give a larger menu selection for those with dietary restrictions (vegetarians, vegans, diabetics, the lactose intolerant, those with severe allergies, etc.), while donating a percentage of profits to end world hunger. This would be called the “Food for All” program, and I’d try to spread it to restaurants across the world.
Bake extra goodies from my restaurant for those Gaians who have touched our hearts, including ohmsmom, Jessica, Siona, Yank fan and many, many others.
And I would finally start writing that play I’ve always wanted to write.
Most of all, I will continue making and adding my positive energy to the world by continuing being kind, non-judgmental, positive, helpful and optimistic. This is how change begins, and I am determined to do all that I can to better the world.
